Some Results to ReportUp above in my post titled Putting a Stream Link In the Playlist I typed a stream link that was known to work in Zara. But as it appears in that post it does not work. I found out why. Let me repeat the link: 74.91.20.139:8064/streamJust as I thought. The full address starts with [http://] but our ALPB Forum software dropped the [http://] which I am only able to show now by placing it in brackets. I have just run a string of six stream links of 1-minute apiece in Zara, only one of which failed. The one that failed did NOT have [http://] at the beginning of the address. Therefore we have discovered that stream links placed in Zara must include the [http://] prefix.

The Heavy Lifter
Druid Hills Radio sits in his air conditioner and says: "The ALPB Forum via Carl comes to the rescue!"
Meanwhile, I have retraced previous efforts to understand streaming through Zara and will continue seeking knowledge, truth, and eventual fame for my work here in Missouri.
As anyone knows, working on software problems often leads in many directions and for 3-hours I've been trying to find the stream URL for WTOP the news station in Washington DC, which has been buried in untraceable JAVA code using non-standard players, which is more and more a roadblock in obtaining a URL stream address.
Ultimately that's not what I started out looking for, but that's where I ended up.
That's probably all we'll do today but next week is another day.

Just One More Thing for the Time Being
What I am working on at this stage of the investigation regarding streaming URL's through Zara are these two things:
1.) Am seeking a reliable and repeatable method of determining the basic URL of streaming radio stations, especially when they are so deeply embedded in players and websites as to be hidden;
2.) Am attempting to assemble a collection of stream URL's in their various forms so as to understand the compatibility or incompatibility of each kind with respect to Zara.
Your help in this undertaking is fully appreciated.

Making Donations
Druid Hills Radio generously asks: "Where can I make a charitable donation?"
Carl Blare answers: I don't know.

I've used Zara for a very long time now and know it like the back of my hand at this point.
Internet Streams: Zara does not support any version of AAC, however it does support OGG, MP3, WAV, and WMA. Carl is correct, most streams will require "http://" in order for Zara to playback. However Zara will also handle streams that begin with "mms://".
Overlap: To set overlap in zara via the filename use "~n" where n= seconds. You actually can use decimal points, for example "Doobie Brothers - Long Train Running~0.5.mp3" will playback in Zara normally but will add a half second of overlap at the end.
Also note, Zara absolutely requires a stable internet connection for streaming or you will have a slew of problems popup.
The Event builder is an insanely powerful tool that is ill-advised to ignore. Without the event builder you might as well just be using winamp.

Without the event builder you might as well just be using winamp. Zara utilizes Windows Media Player, and since WMP can't play ACC then obviously it won't work in Zara.. However, if you install the "Orban AAC/aacPlus Player Plugin" ( www.free-codecs.com/download/aac_aacplus_player_plugin.htm ) it enables WMP to play ACC, so it should then also work in Zara.
And I agree with your point about using Zara Events, don't limit your station by not taking advantage of it!

End80, Thanks for this. I am going to try this to start Midnight in the Desert tonight. It always has worked fine for me in Zara

I'm wondering if I could do all program scheduling via events. I've been trying to juggle my playlist, counting minutes and seconds, adding PSAs as filler, and still have done only a small fraction of my schedule. The Depths of Zara
Jim is the master at asking original questions: "I'm wondering if I could do all program scheduling via events."
That's definitely not been asked before and is the kind of question that makes the room silent while we try to visualize what Zara would be like without a playlist.
As my own pondering returns to a state where I have a few first thoughts about it, I'm thinking it could be done.
Let's turn it over to End80, Johny, Admin, and the other Zara users who will have responses to share.

There's no reason why it couldn't. You can schedule all your shows as you like, but it might be a good idea to still maintain a playlist of short content audio like psa's or what not for filler of gaps that might arise due to different length programs. When the scheduler isn't active then the playlist will automatically kick in and prevent dead air from occurring, then the next scheduled event will take over from there.

I don't use a playlist per say. Everything I do is via events (which may load various things, but there's no base playlist).

When Audiofiles Have Changing Names
It really sinks in why some have mentioned wanting static IP's for source material, and the same would be tru of audio file names in the Event Scheduler.
If a program's name is different from hour to hour, day to day, week to week, keeping the Event Scheduler up-to-date could be a real stenographer-like type-setting chore.
This idea is so fascinating that KDX is taking on an analysis to anticipate the results of using the Event Scheduler very heavily.
To this moment all we've had in the Event Window is a station ID announcement that plays between 5-to-the-hour and 15-past-the-hour if there's an opening.
Avoiding choppy "up-cuts" (the insider's term for one event interrupting another) will take very careful planning.
