Held Saturday Evening August 5, 2017
Note: This thread was originally titled: First ALPB Meeting in August
The Report from Inside TeamSpeak Tower, Bob Felmly, Chairman.
Jim Henry was the Birthday Guest but Radio8Z did not have his trombone handy to play "Happy Birthday".
Under "Old Business" it was brought to discussion Chairman Felmly's thought of presenting a Mini-Seminar on Radio Streaming for future stations looking for tips and guidelines to get a radio station on the internet.
In fact Chairman Felmly has an ingenius method of bouncing signals around using a form of streaming by simply using the TeamSpeak Meeting facility which works reliably as a point-to-point signal distribution method.
Our discussion became so involved that a recording of it could well serve as part of the presentation.
Troy TheLegacy and Carl of Worldround Radio have agreed to team up for a Blare OnAir "Out Loud on Streaming" conversation, Troy speaking from experience operating a popular stream with royalty arrangements for licensed music, Carl on DIY streaming for talk shows requiring no licensing.
Johny at Rag FM operates several streams offering listeners a range of formats and bandwidths, so the ALPB has no shortage of in-house faculty to fully address the streaming topic.
Preparation may go on for awhile because of the immensity of the topic.
Next ALPB Meeting Saturday August 19 7 PM EDT.

Seminar Plans Run Into Blockade
While sorting through the details of the streaming method used here at KDX Worldround Radio, which was to serve as the demonstration model for my part in a forthcoming Mini-Seminar On Streaming by the ALPB, I have found a possibly un-surmountable obstacle.
A vital piece of DSP Plugin software that enables me to connect to an Icecast Server is no longer supported nor available, it being an Encoder V 3.8.3 from Spatial Audio, makers of SAM Automation software.
Therefore no one would be able to build the same system since there's no substitute encoder that will work in this setup.
We're down to the remaining presenters, Bob Felmly MRAM 1500, Johny Rag FM in New Zealand and Troy TheLegacy in Deltaville, with me as part of the audience.
We'll talk about it at the next ALPB meeting on August 19th.

Edcast Seems To Have Gone Away
Remembered a stream encoder named Edcast that came as a DSP Plugin but a search seems to suggest that Edcast is past history.

Radiocaster made by the same makers as RadioBoss is a GREAT incoder that streams both AAC Mp3. It will stream from audio out from your software to VB cable and costs $40. There is a crack for it on The Pirate Bay but use a VPN like Betternet to get it without hassle.

Some More About EncodersI need a DSP Plugin type encoder that will work with Winamp. This may interest you... I have found out that Edcast does exist under a new name and a new developer. It is now Altacast. www.altacast.com/My first attempts to install it have messed up my system so I need to read something to get better instructions.

Streaming University
In a continuing attempt to come up with a streaming system using my particular string of software I have spent several hours finally getting the Winamp DSP Plugin Version of AltaCast Encoder to load up in the Winamp DSP Window.
It was not easy to get it to work and I am not sure what I did right that made it work after hours of failing.
I was more easily able to get the Standalone Version of AltaCast to successfully load.
AltaCast was formerly Edcast and before that it was Oddcast.
We notice that the AltaCast website has nothing dated more recently than March 2016, so we are not sure it is presently being cared for by anyone.
This Encoder software feeds digital audio into an Icecast Server for global radio streaming.
When I return to testing we will try to get AltaCast to actually Encode to Icecast.

Faster Than ExpectedWe returned to experimenting with the AltaCast Plugin Encoder for Winamp and are now streaming through the Icecast Server. Some questions remain, however we got started sooner than expected and can now refer to a list of currently available freeware to stream radio programs. We will continue on this AltaCast setup all day while making measurements. kdxradio.com:8000/kdxmp3stream

Low Latency
For the past half-hour I've been listening to the KDX Stream coming from the link on the previous post, and noted that the latency time is an amazing 1-second!
Of course that may not hold true at all times and locations, but it is unusually fast.
When the ALPB holds its Stream Seminar I'll be able to pass my confusion on to others!

May Be Able to Stream AAC with Icecast
The AltaCast Encoder allows feeding multiple streams from a single encoder, and one of those streams can be set to AAC, the Format of the Future.
We have not tried this yet with Icecast, but do know that some stations are running AAC on Icecast and Troy says it's possible, so we will try it.

Your new stream was solid, with not one dropout Carl. I'd tried Edcast for a while a few years ago, to test a 32k AAC stream for phones. It worked well, so it's a shame they have to discontinue it. Luckily I save every program I grab, unless it's a bad program, so I'd still have Edcast's exe. A segment on Free Thought Radio was called 'Beware of Dogma" and one host was Dan Barker.. I think he's the one who played a nice piano tune and sang during the show too, something you don't always hear, entertainment multi-talents that can be used on a radio show. Boomer

International Recognition to Boomer
The ALPB website can be seen everywhere on the globe, and I want to give Boomer worldwide thanks for checking my stream from the newly installed AltaCast Encoder with Icecast.
Of course there's a swell of pride in having gotten it to work, and puzzlement over how and why it started working after hours of refusing to load.
Let's take stock of what's taken place...
Because I use the Winamp DSP Plugin method of operation I was using a Spacial Audio Encoder which was a paid product, subject to registration, and no longer available, even though it did the job. But it would have served no purpose to mention it in a Seminar on "How To Stream".
The AltaCast Encoder is available free, is even more versatile, and I have kissed it despite the tickle from the Kilobit Rate Per Second.

Altavista can also send the metadata from the file called playing. Txt which you should find in your players directory.
It is similar to radio caster except this one is totally free. I had forgotten about it though because it is a little bit harder to get but since Boomer has a copy of it and has the installation file it might be worth mentioning.
This program should also work with radio DJ as well as Zara. Let me know how it turns out as this was one way I used to stream long before I got nextkast.

Question and More Testing
Troy said: "Altavista can also send the metadata"
What is "Altavista"?
Did you mean AltaCast?
Today I shut off Winamp and the DSP Plugin version of AltaCast, which streams reliably.
I am testing the Stand Alone Version of AltaCast in the following configuration:
Zara -- VB-Audio Point -- StereoTool -- Virtual Cable -- AltaCast Encoder -- Icecast Server
I am successfully streaming but there are bugs.
For example, when I try to Close AltaVista Stand Alone, it refuses to end and I must invoke a "End Task" command from Task Manager.

As Long As We're At It
KDX spent about an hour streaming with AltaCast Standalone Encoder. Only known problem is the "Can't Turn It Off" problem reported earlier.
As long as we had the audio string set up for non-Winamp Non-DSP Plugin operation we loaded B.U.T.T. V_0.1.15 and are streaming... maybe we'll spend the day with this hookup.
Today's threads from KDX are sponsored by can openers.
Think of it. Were it not for the common everyday can opener the invention of the can would have been a dead end and our food would be sealed away while we lost weight. Think of the can opener as Your Key To Food!
