I Figured Out How Part 15 Rules Really Work and I'm All the Smarter For It
It's always been a mystery that I knew had a solution...
How could such little rules even be worth printing? The micro signals achieved by following the literal rules make no sense. Why would such minuscule itsy bitsy rules be worth enforcing?
Then I put 2 and 2 together and knew 4.
O.k. follow me now...
You START with the Part 15 Rules... you have a transmitter....100 mW...... 3-meter antenna... we've been there before....you know the drill.
O.k., now you look at the range. That's not any range.... it covers nothing. It goes nowhere.
So you up the milliWatts maybe to Watts.... add extensions to the antenna and retune.... check the range.. and when you get it where it needs to be, then you STOP and make a note of everything it took and start broadcasting.
Chances are you will operate for years in total harmony with nature and the neighborhood.
In the rare case where the FCC comes to visit, they will check it out, you explain that you began with a Part 15 setup as required and increased only as necessary to achieve the range of your particular needs.
The FCC will decide what to do. They might drive away.
Or, it's very seldom, the FCC might inform you that you need to turn it off.
So... turn it off.
This has been a moment of Great Courtesy provided by the professionals of the FCC.
Say "thank you" and turn it off.
If you enjoyed the experience and want to begin again, find a new frequency and begin anew.
You will only be considered a persistent offender (which could lead to a fine) if you come back on the same frequency.
Opening a new frequency is a "fresh start".
