The question was raised "why not trade out the wire antenna on the AMT3000 to something like a cb whip or other conductive metal such as copper pipe?
I had been wondering the same thing for a while now, but my plan was to lay out some ground radials, drive a ground rod below the transmitter (the amt3000 would be outside in this case) and mount a 3 meter long copper pipe on a short piece of 3'' water pipe driven into the ground as well.
Ground the transmitter to the ground radials and grounding rod, run a short wire to the 3 meter antenna and tune the whole thing up for 1620 Khz. I don't see why that wouldn't work, after all that is basically what i was doing with the TH 5.0 minus the ground. That transmitter did cover 1/4 mile with some noise but was constantly providing the same coverage, it hardly lost or gained any distance with changes in the weather.
With all these rocks around me i am not expecting more coverage than 1/4 mile or so, even if the system was elevated. However, i have considered MRAM's suggestion that our metal roof would make for a great ground system and i may just do it that way.
But yes, i think it would work just same as it would if you were running the wire antenna, i may even gain better bandwidth using a copper pipe over the wire antenna which by the way is not copper but actually an aluminum wire.

FYI: While I am told that my (assembled) 5000 shipped on 2/3 I do not have it yet. Assuming I do receive it early next week it will be about 60 days from order to receiving it. However, on another forum a member mentions that he ordered an AMT-5000 direct from SSTRAN 60 days ago. He has not received it nor has he received any responses from several inquiries about the status of his order I guess I'm mostly directing this question to Carl because I know he's first hand familiar with both of them.. I'm interested to hear your observations of comparisons between the two. Although I realize the 5000 is capable of operating as a class E transmitter, but I'm lost on what the significance of that is, but I'm not really asking for an explanation. What I really want to know is how the two compare in operation (5000 vs 3000).
By simply looking at the pictures I can see the 5000 appears more elaborate, but it's also well over twice the price of the 3000 model. Also, I believe you have only used your 'winattenas' on yours, but I assume you've considered (as I have also) assembling a base loaded antennas before but chose not to.. I probably would have already if I had not already had my Rangemaster ...
Ahh.. I'm just thinking aloud now and losing track of the reason I'm posting! The question is; What is the biggest difference you notice between the two models, do they both sound as good as each other? With only the wire antenna do you notice any appreciable difference in range? And anything other you would like to offer.
