This is Carl Blare and I have always been confused.
I have been confused about the USB port.
In the very beginning when USB was first talked about one of the advantages was supposed to be the ability to HOT CONNECT peripherals directly together without turning off the power to either device ahead of time.
But somewhere along the way I think I read that USB connections can only be safely made after turning off the computer and device.
Now my computer is on the air while I want to plug the Zoom recorder to the USB port to download a great show that is great, but I wonder... should I close the broadcast and shut off the power, or can I just plug these suckers together.
If anybody knows anything phone it into this thread. Withholding knowledge will not make America great.

The things you have to worry about are mass storage devices, such as USB sticks & external disk drives. You should 'eject' USB sticks by right clicking on them from Computer & selecting that option - it ensures that all buffers are flushed. Similarly for external USB drives, you have to click on Remove Device on your status bar (far right, usually a small arrow) and select the drive you want to unplug. There's no need to power anything down.
Other hardware such as microphones etc. can be unplugged without any problems.
Plugging in is never an issue.

Hi David, I have never had an issues with directly unplugging USB drives external or flash.

Plugged
Trusting the welcome good advice from Druid Hills and DavidC I connected the USB cable and the Zoom Recorder is immediately recognized and the air streams are continuing without interruption.
Fine advice feedback from Members of the ALPB.

I have. If you haven't used the storage recently, it will likely be ok. But it can take a little while for Windows to completely flush buffers. And if you pull something out in the middle of a write, the file system will likely get corrupted. Fixable most times but why chance it?
I've had more problems with external disk drives but have also had it happen on USB sticks as well.

I always click on the "safely remove hardware" icon and stop the device to disconnect first and wait for the message to remove now. Sometimes with the external hard drive it says can't be removed now as it's still doing something and wait till it's OK. Removing without doing this may screw things up and the hard drive is where all important stuff like my complete playlist and jingles are stored among other things.
