KDX Worldround Radio is Temporarily Streaming At Very High QualityKDX Worldround Radio has tended to be very sparing with the stream rate being sent over the internet to listeners around the world. It has been the philosophy that human speech, a main ingredient of the KDX schedule, requires only modest bandwidth to be heard clearly, which has been served at 48kbps. Other considerations have included concerns over the reception capacities of typical internet subscribers who commonly have limited bandwidth ISP service or slow computers due to equipment age or inadequate maintenance. Further, our own output pipe is modest and will not accommodate more than a certain number of simultaneous listeners, less so at higher speeds. Today's experiment has in mind the classical music audience also reached by many concerts sent from KDX, leading to today's Test Transmission at 128kbps. One more high quality server test will be sent this weekend at 96kbps. KDX SERVER TEST 128_KBPS

Ok, I'm a little confused.. I click it and it ask if I want to save or open kids.MP3 - That's my first confusion because you say it's a stream, ut the download ayes it's an MP3, so I click 'open' but it just goes on and on downloading without completion, so I canceled it. Did I tell you I was confused already?

You Almost Had It
End80 Radio result of clicking on KDX Link: "I click it and it asks if I want to save or open kids.MP3 - That's my first confusion because you say it's a stream, but the download says it's an MP3"
Actually, I think you were connected for about 1-minute.
Try again and select SAVE and it should ask you which MP3 player to send it to and you will hear it.
By selecting DOWNLOAD you were downloading it to your default hard-drive which could have gone on for weeks.
The extension at the end of the link says "/kdx.mp3" which is an Icecast Mountpoint indicating the stream is in the mp3 format.
The many twists and differences between stream sending and receiving is very confusing.
Your result tells me that maybe I can make a better link, but I'm not sure.
I really appreciate the feedback.

Open Yes
Open is what I meant. Other than that one slip, I know exactly what I'm doing, I just can't explain it.
I think I see you connected now on the Server Window!

You could also copy the link into the Stream URL on Winamp, Music Bee, iTunes. This allows you to create Radio playlists as well.

Testing Into the EveningSeveral combined tests will be going on from KDX Worldround Radio through the weekend. At 6 PM EST / 5 PM CST this evening the 128 kbps Icecast stream will close and re-open while we return to 48 kbps. At 7 PM EST / 6 PM CST KDX will stream live from LRN.FM the "Free Talk Live" program, usually aired the following morning, but tomorrow morning we will be live casting the Inaugural Events from Democracy Now! I clicked the link above and....... (long pause).. (drum roll). It worked marvelously. Good work Carl!!
On a similar note, I spent the spare time I had today building a new production server. RadioDJ software is installed and waiting for me to load my programming tracks into it. The more I use this software, the more I like it. It has been very stable and limitations seem to only be what I haven't figured out how to do.
I got lucky, and found a very suitable computer in one of my closets that I forgot the kids had retired. Added a bit of memory and brought it to life again. Even had a decent sized hard drive in it.
BTW, I stream .mp3 as one format, ogg vorbis as another (decent quality with less bandwidth) and am experimenting with adding a third stream from my icecast kh server (probably will be aac).

aac+ is very good. You can stream @ 64K 44.1 Khz sampling rate and I will tell you it sounds very good. The Legacy has two streams. One is 128K Mp3 for computers and those devices that does not support the AAC+ format. We also use the Icecast 2 KH server as well.

Streaming and Beaming
Thank you CraigF and TheLegacy. Appreciate the checks and tecks. Or, there is no such thing as "tecks", but there should be.
Ya, I like AAC and some engineers have said it is the "format of the future" but I'm not sure when the future actually starts.
Feels strange now that we're entering the bizarre cartoon world of That Trump... say, maybe THIS is the future!

Companies such as Bose and Pioneer support it. The Legacy gets listeners on the AAC+ stream with those2 Stereo receivers.

AAC gives you equivalent quality at a lower nitrate, but mp3 is the most commonly supported format.

Perfectly Correct
In saying "AAC gives you equivalent quality at a lower nitrate, but mp3 is the most commonly supported format."
DavidC hits upon the exact reason why KDX Worldround Radio supports both formats for internet streaming.

More Testing TodayKDX Worldround Radio shut down this morning at 4 AM CST to connect and download via USB audio from our Zoom H4 Recorder intended to test the connected ASTATIC 930VP Micorphone, the Zoom Recorder itself, and re-chargeable AA batteries as part of our new Smart Charger tests. During a 2-hour period ending at 6 AM CST KDX experimented with a different software inter-connection to match that employed by other ALPB stations, using Zara, StereoTool, BUTT Encoder, Icecast Stream Server, and local sound card Output all from a single computer. This experiment was left incomplete while KDX prepared for an upcoming Live Inaugural Ceremony broadcast starting at 7 AM CST. At 7 AM CST KDX started streaming at the experimental bit-rate of 96_kbps stereophonic as part of an exploration of higher quality vs. limitations of bandwidth and slow-computers at the listener end. Also under test is the practice of streaming programs live in addition to the more typical playing of pre-recorded audio files. KDX 96_kbps LIVE STREAMLeft clicking on the link starts the stream playing (with Firefox Browser). Right clicking opens a choice of assigning the stream to a particular Audio Player in your system.

Lost Signal
At 7:35 AM CST KDX Worldround Radio lost connection with Democracy Now's live inauguration coverage.
This means either that Democracy Now is having technical difficulties or maybe their server is saturated with connections and ours got dumped.
This same situation has happened in previous attempts to carry Democracy Now in real time.
Fortunately the KDX listener count is 1, which happens to be me, so there's no serious pressure to do anything about it.
Based on all experience to date with re-streaming live streams in real time I can make the educated disclosure that it is unreliable and not something one can depend on.
Oh! Oh! We are re-connected. Gotta go!
