The music licensing industry is working behind the scenes to wrench more money out of broadcasters for using music, and TheLegacy posting at part15(dot)us came out with a clever way of resisting the exploitation.
Troy TheLegacy suggests replacing music with recitation of the alphabet, which he says is one of the only things remaining in the public domain. If enough stations do this the music industry will get the message and back off.
Radio stations have conventionally been regarded as a major exhibition point for music performance, and the benefit to both sides has been seen as quid-pro-quo.
The full alphabet is printed here for use by stations:
A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z.

First station on the air to employ this new technique could be dubbed... Alphabet Soup..... erm wait, probably some kind of copyright snafu in that name.

Mr. Bucket has a point... alphabet soup might belong to Campbells or Heinz... but if they sponsored the station you could be Alphabet Soup of The Air and might even want to throw some numbers into the mix...
Shortwave DXers have reported hearing "numbers stations", which are radio stations that announce strings of numbers. They say the purpose of numbers stations is a mystery, but maybe it is simply their way of avoiding music copyright expenses.
KDX will be adding periods of Alphabet Announcements starting this weekend.
