The Internet Building, home to KDX Worldround Radio, is located in a topographic "bowl", which is to say that all directions from here are uphill, surrounding us on all sides by an upward climb.
Because of our location in "depressed terrain" FM reception is significantly attenuated compared to buildings up at the summit of the hill. This became very obvious when we worked with a neighbor at the very top of the street who was searching for an open frequency to use with a C.Crane FM Transmitter. Almost all of their FM frequencies were full with stations from miles around, while 1,000 feet west at low ground our reception was very different with far less crowding, giving us more open frequencies.
Keep this factor in mind when searching for frequencies at your location.

I've always suggested that a person walks around outside or drives around a 2 mile radios of their home when they pick an FM or even AM frequency. They can use Radio Locator for starters, but you still have to do the homework.
I've found out quickly here in Deltaville,m VA that when the temperature drops or rises 20 degrees we get Froggy 99.9 in Del Marva, MD and I also get WBIG (Big 100) which is a Rock station in Washington DC. Its over 3 hrs away but they come in FULL QUIETING and in Stereo. And sometimes I get a God Caster on 100.1 but that one only fades in from time to time and is weak. Since there is a God caster on 99.7 and one that also fades in over the top of Froggy 99.9 I don't mind broadcasting when 100.3 is not coming in.
I could have used 87.7 Mhz but its not clear as to if the white space devices are allowed there yet with the 1 Watt. I've not heard the go ahead from our spokesperson who has relations with the FCC on this one. Last I heard they are working on a proposal to allow this to be a reality and if so I'd use that however there is still an issue. Many Panasonic Radio's can't go to 87.7. 87.9 is available on most receivers but any lower like 87.7 is tricky.
The point is that one should be sure to check their weather and make sure that their chosen frequency is blank during these inversions (ducting effects).

Troy,
I am surprised you don't hear WSGS-FM 101.1 at 100 KW out of Hazard,Ky. They are often heard in Indiana, Illinois and Ohio.

Blare explained - It's a regional religious practice in Deltaville, Virginia. The "Chosen Frequency" has a whole sentence in the Bible.

Druid Hills Reports "Jesus wept"
The ALPB held an emergency meeting and these are part of the Minutes of That Meeting:
Chairman BoB: The lord and savior is over there sobbing, perhaps there's something we can do.
Rag FM suggests: Perhaps we can get him a good foot wash. That has worked before.
Radio8Z puts in: If we can cheer him up maybe he'll turn some water into wine.
Worldround Carl sees hope: Ya and then we can sing "What a Friend We Have in Jesus"

Back to topic. If the distant station comes in on a regular basis during these inversions people may decide that they want to listen to that particular station. You as an unlicensed broadcaster are a thorn in their side there for somebody will complain that will get you visited most likely or pulled off the air permanently this we're trying to avoid.
Maybe just maybe those stations that were barely over the limit and got taken down were taken down because of the fact that people were trying to pick up a different station on the particular frequency that they were broadcasting on and lo and behold they were being blocked from doing so. The first thing that will come to a regular person's mind who is not a radio geek is to turn them in.
