Something i have been kicking around lately is the idea of creating a sign or bumper sticker to advertise Blue Bucket Radio which in turn will drum up listeners.
If i was going to do this, i would have a sign shop make a sign that goes in our yard, kind of like those annoying political posters with rods that anchor the sign in the dirt.
Besides word of mouth, how have you advertised your station to bring listeners to your end of the dial?

When I lived in Elizabeth City, NC I wanted to put a banner on my porch that said The Legacy and the frequency of the station. I mentioned this to my Stepson and a few other folks that lived with me at the time and they thought it was a stupid idea. Most likely because they didn't take my station seriously and which if I had a sign up I'd have gotten tons of listeners because the house was right across the street from the library. There was a school about two houses down from that and about 300 Ft on the right side of my house as I walked down the driveway was a bar and even city hall was close to the house. Even my 600 Ft range of The Talking House would have got listeners on AM.
I missed a wonderful possibility because of some folks that had too much pride to see a banner on the front porch or a sign at the end of the driveway where people had to pass everyday.
Now where I live I've posted on the town section of Facebook. Word got out and I have listeners. Plus I have a few folks right at the complex who love Album Rock and they talk about the station.

Got an interview in the local paper.
I was originally in a storefront, but when I closed that, I put the sign at the end of my driveway.
Never did a bumper sticker, but it's a good idea. Or giveaways like pens with the station on it.
A business card is a must. Give it out to local businesses (and anyone who seems remotely interested in the station). Put it in mailboxes, windshields, etc.
Put the stream up on available websites, such as tunein, reciva, etc.
I've found that general facebook or other types of social media posting doesn't work very well - too much competition. However, directed postng works very well. If you're going to do an Elvis weekend (as an example), let Elvis Presley fan clubs know about it, post on the Elvis facebook page, etc. I did something on Cliff Richard, let fans know, and my usual 5-10 listeners went up well over 100.

Something else you might want to consider are magnetic signs for the car with the station name and logo. You can get these very inexpensively from VistaPrint. Back when I owned a licensed station I drove around town with these signs with the station call sign and channel. Wherever I went people asked about the station. A nice extra: all the mileage and maintenance on the car was tax deductible as a business expense.

What I Did
During the years when I ran an audio/video recording service I had two ways of promoting the business which brought new business.
No. 1 was little note pads that had my company name and phone number. I'd give these free to all clients and all new contacts, and there were so many pads out there that I'd see them on peoples desks months later because people use note pads.
No. 2 was a periodic newsletter which became easy to print in the early days of Amiga computers and laser printers. It had stories about recording experience and other odds and ends with pictures and went out by mail to clients and prospective clients.
Another method I think is smart is to print and distribute an annual calendar. This puts you on people's walls where they see you all the time.

As posted at part15.us I put a sign on the community mail box. Also once determined exactly which houses and other residents around me would get the signal and made up some posters(homemade) and addressed them to "occupant" and sent them to all the residents in range and it actually worked. Next thing I saw was a post at part15.us by a new member who got the "to occupant" ad and was listening. Didn't ask exactly which house but was floored by the fact that someone probably on my street saw this and joined part15.us. But that person never posted anything more and a while ago contacted through part15.us and asked if he was still there but got no answer. I just maintain a note on the mailbox.
Problem is that most people don't see anything unless it has flashing lights or something. I watch when people get their mail and most don't see the sign or even look.

One listener can lead to more, especially if they like what they hear. Great work Mark.

Great! I wouldn't mind having that kind of exposure myself. Davidc

Approach your local newspaper. I was surprised how much interest there was from supposed 'competitors' for my radio station on Bowen Island - even from licensed radio stations (Artisan Radio got a mention in a nation-wide radio show on CBC Radio).

I recall someone had advertised their part 15 station by changing the SSID name of their WiFi router to say ie: Tune into City Radio 1650 AM, so anyone in the area would see it show up it in their list of connections of their laptop, tablet, phone, or even a nearby home computer - curiosity would probably kick in and they would then reach for the radio dial.. Not a bad idea, I have seen some pretty strange and funny SSID names pop up on my tablet before which made me curious of who's it was.

I wonder if there's an archive of that
