Hello broadcasters...
This my first post, so I'll introduce myself... I've been around radio all my life. I built a crystal radio kit as a kid, was a radio DJ in college at a station operating at less than 100 watts. My dad introduced me to CB on a road trip to Florida in 1978 and I've used one in the car on every long trip since. Presently, I have been operating a CB base station for one year at my house, after tinkering with a walkie talkie that I bought at a flea market last fall. I tapped into a large "community" in the Detroit area and once I started hearing skip, I really caught the radio bug. I'm planning to take a step further into amateur radio this winter and get my technician license.
I have a 5/8 wave ground plane antenna chimmeny-mounted 30' off the ground, and a couple of experimental antennas on my garage. At various times during the day and night I am getting high amounts of interference that pretty much take out my receive. It's very local. When I walk around with a walkie talkie, or drive in the mobile, the interference fades away in about 100' in any direction. How might I identify the type as well as the source? On a 40 channel radio, the noise starts around 27.075, peaks at 27.205 and ebbs at 27.375. No other frequencies are affected. The theories I've heard so far are indoor plant grow lamps or alarm systems. The noise sounds kind of like a helicopter or a lawn sprinkler (RATTA-TATATATA-HISS-HISS-HISSSS!), and varies in pattern and intensity. I'd like to hear what others might have to say about this...
