Over at Part15.us, I've told my tale (so far) of exploring using public domain sound recordings only on my station. It's much easier in Canada, as our copyright laws aren't nearly as draconian as those in the U.S.
So, continuing the spirit of running a Part 15 station in the most inexpensive manner possible, here are my latest plans.
First, a bit of background. There are 2 licensing agencies in Canada, SOCAN and ReSound. SOCAN (which is concerned about a song's creators) doesn't care about over-the-air broadcasting using BETS-1, and ReSound (which handles the sound recordings themselves) has a minimal blanket licensing fee. It's streaming both really care about.
So, I plan on running 50s & early 60s oldies on FM (the sound recordings are in the public domain which takes care of ReSound - no licensing fee period, and SOCAN doesn't care). I will not stream this. I'm thinking of getting a Decade CM-10 if there are still any around.
I will run vintage jazz, classical and OTR on AM (with either a ProCaster or a Talking Sign). Both the sound recordings AND the songs will be in the public domain, so I can stream as well.
As I've reported earlier, I currently have approximately 1000 vintage jazz songs that have been verified to be in the public domain. I haven't done much in the past month or so, as I've been tied up with personal matters, but will now start adding to this playlist, as well as building up an OTR & classical playlist (most OTR is in the public domain here in Canada, and all classical recordings published prior to 1965).
I will be hosting any streaming that I do on my own computers, probably 2 - one to run server software, host the website and the stream, and the other to run the automation software (including audio processing).
