What's Going On
Donald Trump says it all the time, "We don't know what's going on."
A very intelligent link on Blue Bucket's Website tells about a man who did know what was going on, sometimes before it went on. His pen name was George Orwell, and his lesser known street name was Eric Blair.
My name is Carl Blare, but has the spelling been changed? After all, I have an aunt named Ms. H. Blair, and her life is a mystery she won't talk about.
Orwell wrote that we were being dumbed down for social control, but some of us realize we're downright dumb and are looking for knowledge at part 15 websites.
We hope someday to be dumbed up.

Getting Shoutcast to Work
Barry, do you have the two ports used by Shoutcast forwarded in both your router and Windows firewall?

I've found it best to systematically narrow down the problem. Can you access the stream on the server computer through your website? That will tell you if the problem is in the website/stream, or outside (i.e., the firewall or router or even something else). I suspect the problem is outside, but you never know. I never run the Windows firewall on production computers, unless you're using them for other purposes (which you probably shouldn't in any event, as those purposes will impact the server). In any event, I'd turn off the firewall and see what happens. If you're still having problems, then it's likely your router isn't set up properly. I'm not familiar with Shoutcast, but the software that I use, Icecast, needs to have Port 8000 open, and forwarded to the computer on which it runs. Using another computer, you can try accessing the Shoutcast stream directly (i.e., not through your website, such as and that will give you a good indication if your router/stream is configured properly. And if you've already tried all of those things, I apologize.

The Narrow Down Project
Thank you for input on this David. Turning Windows Firewall off is something I hadn't thought about, now I'm curious about it.
I have used Icecast a lot and as you say it takes Port 8000, although I've meant to study whether the port number can be moved within Icecast, although I forgot the reason I wanted to move it.
Shoutcast requires two consecutive ports, for example: 8002 and 8003. The local Shoutcast server sends on the first port and receives replies on the second port.

The Icecast port can be moved via the config file.
For Shoutcast, you should only have to open the receiving port on the router, as by default all ports usually are open for outgoing traffic (that's why software firewalls can be useful - they detect unexpected outgoing traffic from viruses and malware). That can easily be checked, in any event.
I usually turn off anti-virus software on production servers as well (after running thorough virus and malware checks, of course). You shouldn't be doing e-mail and browsing (the usual source for these kinds of things) on those computers.

Been Lucky So Far
From everything I hear about the troubles other people have with software and hardware conflicts, crashes and freezes with their computers, I have been amazingly lucky.
While I agree that production computers should be dedicated and not used to also run a bunch of other software, which is what David just said, I have been breaking the rule.
The same computer that supplies three Shoutcast streams and now a Webhost Stream is also used for e-mail, browsing, and audio production.
I even have AdAware Antivirus running.
Avast Antivirus was a different story... at one point an upgrade conflicted with things and gave me daily freeze-ups until I removed it.
But David's advice is in the planning stage, as KDX intends to add a second computer so the stream servers can run without sharing so much CPU and memory with other activity.
Switching to another thought about running a home webhost... as we know the website disappears from the internet when the computer is turned off. For example, last night I shut down for safety during a storm and of course the website didn't exist until I turned back on.
Some nights I sign off and shut down for the night and turn the computer off.
What are some thoughts on this aspect of running a home webhost?

Thoughts About Home ServingWhile thinking about Barry's problem so-far getting Shoutcast to run properly, I realized some details I'd never thought about before, and some of this may or may not give Barry some ideas. Before turning on the Abyss Home Hosting Website program, I was already streaming Shoutcast from my computer... all the listener needed was the link to address:Port/listen.pls. Now that the Abyss Hosting Website is running I changed the way it works, by putting an HTML page within Abyss containing the links to the Shoutcast streams. Both ways work just as well, it would even be possible to do it both ways at the same time. Barry, give some details as to how you are configuring Shoutcast, maybe we can spot a way of getting it to run.

Ok so the problem was the port after all, weird thing is i already had it open once but some how it was closed again. I think with all the storms we have had there may have been some moments where the power to the house was interrupted by close lightning strikes but they were not direct. Our power did not go out , maybe that had something to do with it. I just assumed it was still open. thefreeproject.no-ip.org:8000/listen.plsthefreeproject.no-ip.orgCan i get members to try the stream please? Thanks Barry of Blue Bucket Radio 1620 AM

Hearing Perfect Transmission
It is 7:32 AM CDT and from our listening post on the Mississippi River we are hearing Blue Bucket Radio transmitting WebWide from their Shoutcast server located behind a mountain in Kentucky.
The first voice I heard was Chairman Bob Felmly talking ALPB business, with responses from members Johny, Lefty, Radioboy Allan and me. It seems to be a Low Power Hour from the days when we broadcast entire ALPB meetings. As I listen longer I hear that we are talking about starting an ALPB website... wow... these are the early days! Next a Big Picture Science show with Seth Shostak and Molly Bentley telling us the world is running out of helium.
I was going to start KDX and listen to Alex Jones, but Blue Bucket Radio has grabbed my ears and I'm staying with it! I'm listening on my C.Crane FM2 at 89.9.
Your stream is great, Barry!

Thank You Carl,
At this point, the playlist is mostly Low Power Hour, The Little Things, Big Picture Science, The Happy Station Show and some of the other programs from PCJ Media. Later today I would like to change somethings around with the air chain so that the audio you hear on the stream will actually be from a radio tuned to the AM signal at 1620 AM.
Right now the stream is mono at 96 kbps and the audio you hear is from the playout computer, adding the over the air signal will give listeners an idea of what my part 15 AM sounds like if they were able to receive it over the air.

The Way to Go
I like that way of doing it, Barry... that is, streaming the signal from a radio receiver. I'd even like to hear the empty frequency before your sign on and after your sign off.
I have never tried the streaming from a radio, but you might inspire me to try it.

Ok it is streaming direct from the radio tuned to 1620 AM
NOPE, Nevermind.... i am mistaken. I will have to isolate the radio from the main computer by streaming from a different computer.
