The traditional turntable is a round table that spins, as a means of spinning the vinyl "platter" in a circle. Some people call the turning table a platter, which explains the name of a remarkable new record player from Italy called a "Platterless Turntable". Imagine two of these sitting side-by-side in your Part 15 radio studio. PLATTERLESS TURNTABLE

Interesting, but a bit pricey at over $57K.
When I was a teen my older brother bought a portable record player. Ran on "D" cell batteries, played 45 and 33 1/3 rpm records.
Amazingly, it had no platter or table. Just a spindle about 2 1/2" in diameter. This made for a slim profile. It was about 12" long, 4" wide and 2 1/2" high which included the flip-top cover.
I don't remember if it was stereo but sounded pretty good in the earphones.
It probably cost around $10 in 1965. Today I suppose that would be more like $50. Quite a bit less than today's platter-less player.
Obviously not the same precision device as today's player but hey-shows how history repeats itself. And they probably think they have a new idea!
