I set out looking for a cheap rechargeable by usb AM radio because I got tired of buying AA batteries all the time for my portable radio.. Wasn't sure if such a thing existed, but evidently they do. Anyway I bought this thing on Amazon mostly on impulse for just under $25 solely because I liked the way it looked, thought it was cute, even though it really wasn't what I had in mind (I wanted a pocket radio to carry around). This is really more of a little desk radio which turns out to have a surprisingly bold, loud and clear sound. AM/FM/Shortwave, all of which receives good reception,plus it's a bluetooth speaker and can also play directly from a USB or card quite effectively. The radios lithium battery is charged via usb, but you can also put 2 D size batteries in it which almost seemed pointless to me because I left the radio playing for 6-8 hours on a full charge of the lithium it came with. I've been using the D battery compartment as storage for the usb cord!
Not saying this is some kind of high quality radio, just saying that it is the best ,$25 I've spent in a while. There're several styles and colors, this is the one I selected
