The Cousin Brucie show Saturday nights on WABC New York has been extended to 4 hours from 3 starting this Saturday. The talk show following last Saturday's show was discussing listeners to AM radio and mentioned that the ratings are way up for Cousin Brucie than the normal talk programing....3 times!
Maybe they(WABC) get it....you bring back what was on AM radio in it's hey day(50s 60s 70s)
I am not at all surprised. If fact I predicted this when Boomer first told me about the Cousin Brucie show.
WABC comes in here in Toronto with skywave like a local.

WABC comes in here in Toronto with skywave like a local. John Catsimatidis is said to be worth in excess of 3 billion dollars. What make this great is he is bankrolling WABC on his money, and was willing to make the gamble that the naysayers were all wrong about AM radio.
Tuned in and loving every minute of it! SP

Cat's Corner
I thought Cousin Brucie coming back to AM and WABC could be a winner too, he's a rock and roll DJ legend. Another thing is in a sea of talk shows, religion, sports stations, by the thousands, Brucie is unique, and exclusive.
It's nice how WABC is being run 'off the grid' of commercial radio by Cats. I'd like to see more of that. I've envisioned having a station run by a trust, with a manifesto to do radio with quality on top, especially technical quality, something many stations don't seem to take seriously. Since what's good programming is subjective, the station would take a broad view, like continuing to look for new programming and new ways to present it, new ways to do radio and take chances in things.
Glad to hear that Brucie has brought in 3 times normal listeners!

I'll have to give a listen and see if WABC can be heard here in northeast Ohio.

Good idea, however the devils in the details. Take a quick look at Pacifica Radio. They started out doing world-class radio, and have devolved into selling quack medicine cures....

Good news! While driving to the studio last night, I tuned to 770 kHz, WABC. They were booming in here so should be no problem to hear Cousin Brucie tonight.

Good show with Cousin Brucie! Tony Orlando continues after and the rock and roll continues! WABC has the right AM revitalization.
I think they get it. If more AM stations got back to their hey day and took WABC's lead the listeners would return. This should be a regular evening thing all the time at WABC. With different DJs.
Loose the talk, sports, religious, Didn't AM's listeners take a nose dive in the eighties and nineties when one by one all stations went talk? And abandoned the Baby BOOM generation?
Saturday night at WABC is bringing back all the listeners they had back when. And no one in my generation gives a damn about digital.

Right on! Cousin Brucie did his Halloween show, early on it was spooky music, then he had a tribute to James Bond, playing Shirley Bassy's Goldfinger and the last part of the show was music for lovers and dedications.
I was surprised to hear Tony Orlando, yes, of Tony Orlando and Dawn, I didn't even know he was a DJ! It was his first show, and he had TWO hit makers on the phone with him for interviews and to play their music, Lionel Ritchie and an artist who has slipped my mind, when I had to leave the radio at that moment, but I heard the Supremes mentioned I believe.
I agree bringing back the programming from the times when AM was the hottest radio is a good move, but also bringing it back live, not a canned national weekend oldies show or playing old American Top 40s with Casey Kasem, which serve a purpose, but make a station sound less than up to date.
Brucie and Tony were playing the old hits, but with contemporary purpose, interactive with call-ins and the latest networking like e-mail and Facebooks, in-the-now and not a rehash. That's what I think makes it work.
The 'live' factor is one of the things that I think makes talk radio work too. In the dial full of radio stations, many play newer music, hot hits, but are virtual and voice-tracked, even with robot voices. Talk shows and sports might seem to be overdone, but when you think about it, those are the biggest sources of live current programming on the air, featuring interaction through calls, so it's no wonder why listeners go for them.

So I went to WABCradio.com to get some info on Cousin Brucie. Nothing on the home page, doesn't come up in the search box. After looking all around, I checked the "On Air" dropbox, nothing. Clicked on "All Shows" at the bottom of the "On Air" list, then had to page through the calendar to Saturday where I finally found a link to his page. Don't understand why this guys show isn't Front Page news, given all the interest. Cousin Brucie
Edit: Oh sure, now he shows up in the search box. Webmaster must be a little behind time...

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_MorrowMentions his comeback on WABC but the original mentioned music coverage of 60s to 80s changed to 50s 60s and a touch of 70s as you hear.
