I have been paying close attention so what's been going on with part 15 engineer and a few others who decided to drop out of the hobby for several reasons I will go over a few of them.
Number one the big time and deliberate misinformation I'm distance allowed for part 15 AM Broadcasting. There are a few folks who have an agenda or axe to grind when it comes to part 15 hobby broadcasters on the am broadcast band. This may have started years ago when companies like Kentucky fried Chicken began using it to advertise their product on the am broadcast band which may have angered some radio station owners.
Their signals certainly traveled more than 200 ft and there were some that put up an arms race against it. However these types of broadcast continued for quite some time.
Scare tactics: when talking about ground leads etc. It is true that KENC got a NOUO for a grossly long ground but that was not the only reason they got cited. Ground lead was just a way to stop them the real issue was interference and when mr. Cartwright was told about his interference issues instead of shutting down until he got his transmitter fixed continued operating so the only legal recourse was to find a flaw that they could use to shut him down and hopefully permanently. Ground lead was the deal that they used. I'm not saying he didn't break rules I'm just saying they had to use a flaw that they never used or rarely used on anyone else at the time.
So I advise people to try and run a clean operation and there shouldn't be any problems coming your way. This means Spectoral as well as the way you operate your station.
FM: I am going to say this and this came from an agent that visited me. Your reception on FM under most radios that are receivable due to the lack of sensitivity on most radios you will buy at your local Walmart Kmart Meijer thrifty acres you know the deal do not have super sensitivity therefore the full allowed FM power will get you a hundred fifty to two hundred feet. What they don't tell you is on a car stereo or high-end receiver you can be received up to a thousand feet sometimes more. This has been proven on a certified Decade MS 100 set up high and done by an FCC electronics engineer so what anyone else says is full of hooey on that one.
Money: there is no doubt that this Hobby is not for the faint of heart and not for those that don't have the patience and creativity to come up with ways to earn money to run their radio station. It may mean that you have to start off on the internet first get a sponsor and have plenty of people who donate. This is done by playing a niche format and having a huge catalog of over a month of non-repetitive music requested song should only be played once any 24-hour. That is how you get your donations rather your gospel country poker or anyting you have to be different than the rest of them I've learned that to experience in my hobby. if you get people that like your station they will donate and that keeps you on the air with new equipment and able to repair things when they go wrong. If you are running transmitters most likely you will run 24 hours a day this means more cause for electronic failure. It's not if it will fail it's when and you can bet that within a year to a year-and-a-half something is going to fail. A computer is only guaranteed for two years and that's with regular use remember our hobby requires our computers to run 24/7.
Running on a budget this might mean sacrifices I'm talking about audio processing. The way the big boys run it is plenty of hardware processing mixing boards things of that nature but if you are on low income or disabled what you have to do is depend on a computer and possibly some software audio processing as opposed to hardware and instead of running multiple computers you might have to run one supercomputer with a very high end fast processor and all the ram that you could possibly afford along with the biggest hard drive you can possibly afford. This might mean a rent-to-own option such as Aarons Rent To Own. You can get an all-in-one desktop for $85 a month 8 gigs of RAM 1 terabyte hard drive and it will run a radio station or a laptop with 12 gigs of RAM 1 terabyte hard drive AMD A10 processor running at a speed close to 3 gigahertz. You will also need a separate hard drive to backup all your music.
Now to get the music you can get a service such as Apple music and a program call Apple music converter this will convert Apple music files to MP3 at 320 Kbps. you'll need to subscribe to the service of course but you should have no trouble downloading anything from that service. There are other places to get music too use your creativity you'll figure it out the point is that when you're on a budget you might not be able to afford all the expensive turntables but yet you can have a station with tons of music for people to listen to.
Request line: one way to get donations is to have an audience that you engage with and one way to do that is to actually play people's request. You might not want to give your cell phone number out to your audience if you only have one phone but you could use text now which uses Wi-Fi or your cell phones data and you can either pay $3 a month and you'll get a phone number that will never die and you could forward it to your cell phone when you want to or keep it free but always remember to use that number every month in order to keep it. It works your listeners can text or call you and this is something you can do on the cheap.
The main thing you need to do is establish yourself get known in your local area this could mean signs telling people when you do your test don't be afraid to tell folks what you're doing. You will also need to advertise the loop antenna azure testing I recommend going to different places in your town park in the parking lot and test it with your loop make sure that people see it if they ask what you're doing you tell them what you're doing and tell them all about your station and what it's about. Ask them if they have request this way you get known. The more people that see you the better you could even run a remote computer program which allows you to run your desktop over your phone I use any desk this really makes people interested when they hear their request being played over the radio while you're in the parking lot on your phone it really makes them think and of course they will listen possibly donate.
I hope that some of these things can help the folks that want to run their local radio stations they can be successful as I have been and they don't have to make $1000000 to do it it just takes a little hard work and creativity and you'll get somewhere but don't expect it to happen overnight sometimes you have to piece things together to get it to work but in the end you will have a good time doing it but be patient and be consistent at what you do good luck.
