2P3I saw a review of that reproduction radio kit somewhere, maybe Radio Jay Allen had it? It had a familiarity to it once I saw the front plate, but other than that, I didn't know about the original radio or the fandom for it. It looks kind of retro, of course not really going back to the 1960s with the technology, or they'd be using germanium transistors in metal cans and air-veriable tuning capacitors. It looks like a mixer/IF strip in a SIP package, the long IC, and maybe the transistors are for the audio output. Two IF transformers, Yellow, Black, and oscillator, red, and I don't see a ceramic filter in the parts shown, more classic that way. I like the length of the antenna bar, looks like it could be a four inch, and it has two coils for some reason, could those be primary and secondary? I have built 2 or 3 of those 'DIY - For Learning' radios, most are just for fun, but I don't mind making them, the fun part is building the kit. This one looks to be better, and has 1 mv claimed sensitivity. Maybe the detector is inside of the IC? That should be better than the usual diode, silicon today, it's where these pocket radios often fall down and have higher distortion than they should. To see what's being talked about: www.ebay.com/itm/Tecsun-2P3-Superheterodyne-AM-Radio-Receiver-DIY-Kit-RED/142470835201Going by the story of how the radio came to be for Chinese experimenters, where they bought just the case, then made their own radio to go in it, I'd like to see a case, with a board inside, and the tuning and volume controls, and maybe the loopstick installed already, and the speaker. The rest of the board would just be a perfboard with many holes to wire your choice of radio components in it, to make diode, regen, reflex and superhet radios on it and do lots of experimenting. Reviews on you tube say this is very good with decent mellow audio also. Was thinking to get one of these just to have for nostalgia and build it myself.

IC
Howdy,
Looking at the board top side in one of the other pictures in that listing, now I see, the IC, might be the audio amp, it's close to the earphone jack.
I think that's good, it means the radio signal section is made of discrete components for better learning how radio circuits work.
I hope the instruction manual is as good quality as the introduction to the radio seen in that listing, at least Ramsey quality.

Howdy y'all:
The tecsun 2p3 is not a bad looking radio.
The average built time is about 2 hour depending on your ability!.
MANUAL:
GOOD:
1) 20 x 30 inches. 2) color manual, nice. 3) good size schematic with voltage readings!. 4) good layout chart with indentifing parts!. 5) nice top and bottom Pcb showing parts location!. 6) double side manual, prints large.
BAD:
1) Does NOT give you step by step instructions!. 2) Does NOT make you check each section in test!. 3) You need glue or adhesive tape for project!. 4) layout of procudure.
With this kit and manual this is NOT for the average person do to
If something goes wrong, your out of luck!.
This is my opinion

Howdy y'all:
The tecsun 2p3 am radio kit
Very important note:
Make sure that IC measurement points 1,2,3, sections are making Trace connections if there not radio will NOT work!. You will see this on the Trace side print in manual.
The wires that go to speaker could be a little bit longer what you can use is the left over wires from The battery hook up for your new speaker wires!.
As reception report goes it did better then my tecsun pl880 unit!. I was pulling in weaker station in better then the pl880 with amp on!.
The audio quality is very nice for this unit!.
This little unit is nice I'm impressed
I still got adjustments to do otherwise it's done
Hope this helps out

Sounds good. Maybe I will get one just to build and sit on a shelf. How is the sound? Mellow, or tinny/screechy and hard to listen to? Guy on youtube says nice and bassy for a small size?

The IC is the audio amp. The discrete transistors and components is the mixer/osc, IF etc. A ceramic filter is there. One of those "IF cans" is just a shield for a few components. The two coils is similar to Ccrane's twin coil that is used in the EP PRO, and the CC radio.
I may get one if it has decent sound that's not to screechy that's typical of little radios like this.

Howdy y'all:
Tecsun 2p3 am radio kit
Sound quality:
Is very good not to much Bass and with some high's!,
Keep in mind that it all depends on radio station audio settings
That will determine what you hear out of radio receiver!.
Range:
I'm 40 mile away from a 400 watt station and I can pick this
Station up and understand the station ( tecsun 2p3 )
When I use my tecsun pl880 I have trouble picking up this station
Even turning the radio amp on!.
I seen the tecsun 2p3 at my location pick up better then
Three other radio that I used to compare to!.
Someday I'm be making a c-quam radio out of this unit when I get
A chance to see how it preforms!.
In my opinion this radio is worth it!.
I hope this help out

Kits are baby foxes
That's what kits lack today, good step by step instructions. One cheapie pocket radio, I had to noodle out the way the circuit should go, and look up parts references to be sure I was doing it right, going by the reference design.
I also wondered what kind of material the board is made of.
Oldies WMRK, that's what I thought later, looking at the top side of the board in that listing, the IC is for audio, not mounted in the RF area.
I didn't realize that one IF can was just a cover, I've seen that done in TVs, covering a sensitive circuit. Cool about the twin coils, and it looks like they're made of the proper wire and not just magnet wire.
I also have found that the sound quality varies between stations, sometimes a lot, and can make a good radio sound bad, so you have to find a station in your area that cares about sound quality, or listen to your own transmitter as the standard.

Howdy y'all:
Tecsun 2p3 am radio kit.
As the manual goes it could be better, with my experience I got around the issues!,
Keep in mind each country's do things different !,
I like the nice big schematic and top & bottom pictures as well!.
P C B board is real nice my solder was GREAT and all my connections
where very shinny on one try!.( Great quality board )!.
The audio output is a inline chip!.
The circuit layout is great in my opinion goes from left to right
Looking from the back!.
You can tune this unit to cover the hole am band ( 1700 )
Or leave it to factory settings of 1620 am
I love the way this unit received weak stations!.
I personally would buy another one
Hope this helps
