Crystal radios are a great thing, I built a number of them as a younger pup.
By the time I got into radio, technology had gone from the galena and cat's whisker detectors to germanium glass diodes, all of the kits came with a 1N60 diode. I always wanted to try a cat's whisker detector though. I built a foxhole radio, but couldn't get that to work.
It's great how you can use just a few parts and build a radio, a great starting point for kids in hands-on technology.. or it was. Someone wrote that a kid can build a crystal radio, but there's not much that's appropriate for them to listen to on AM radio these days.
What wasn't mentioned is, why not build the transmitter too? That's double the fun and education, and it's all still relevant in today's wireless world.

Many Good Thoughts
Boomer opened a plethora of thoughtful ideas, starting with: "A great starting point for kids."
Sure, but also a great starting point for any humans of any age. It is never too late to stop dull living and enter radio.
Then in his further comments Boomer closes a brilliant sales talk by pointing out how bad radio is today followed by the perfect solution, build a gald darn transmitter and make a better radio station!
That's what we've been saying!
When is anyone going to listen to how smart we all are here at ALPB?
