Is the Station ID a Program or a Studio Topic? As we know the FCC allows part 15 stations to use whatever Station Identification they prefer, so long as it is not confused with a licensed station. Licensed stations MUST air IDs, program length permitting, at the top of the hour including call letters and city of license. We all have names for our part 15 stations and most of them identify with the city they're in, but since location is not required under the part 15 rules, KDX has been coming from the more generalized place called "The Center of North America", even though DHR points out that the real center is in Nebraska (far from here). KDX chooses not to associate with local city/town names because we are an international station and have nothing to do with those locales. We have thought about using old place names like "Dogtown", a nearby neighborhood dating from the 1904 World's Fair when foreign "savages" housed as part of an exhibit were rumored to eat dogs. We have considered using far fetched places like "The Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica". Today, at long last, we have decided to conform with the FEMA Region Map Allocations posted by the Federal Emergency Management Association. From today forward the 2 radio stations of Worldround Radio, KDX and KHZ, broadcast from FEMA Region VII. Find Your FEMA Location

I wonder why FEMA Region IV doesn't include Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands as well?

No Emergency Management for Them Islands
Could be part of why Puerto Rico only merited some tossed paper towel rolls.
There are whispers that certain real estate barons have plans to gentrify the islands.
Not intended as a political remark.

DHR replies: The Florida Association of Broadcasters along with others decided to throw 10,000 radios at the residents instead of paper towels.

I'd think manually cranked radios would be the best, since the power has been out for a long time in some places. I'm glad they sent whatever they had, and it would be a good fund drive for local radio stations, collect money for radios to send.
Are there stations on the air to listen to yet, apparently most of the island had no local reception.

Some non-comm LPFM's donated/loaned solar powered FM transmitters and audio boards. Yes major markets are back on-line.

That's great to hear things are improving, I hadn't heard any recent news. Solar power FM, that must be pretty cool.
I forgot you mentioned Dogtown, Carl, I hadn't heard of that legend, but immediately thought of Harry Chapin's song Dogtown.
I used to want to have a universal, placeless program, and since it was late at night on AM, it could be coming from any city on the night wave, so I went with that DX idea.
It used to be that station ID or the name of a show was such an important thing, like the success of the project hinged on having a great name, but I don't think so as much these days. Now I kind of look like it like band names, they become cool and legendary after the band becomes successful.
Now I don't bother with heavy imaging or trying to make the pieces align with a theme, just making casual connections with something, and often obscure ones that few listeners would ever know.
Coming from Dogtown might be cool, or you could find out the history of your frequency, and if it was ever used by another station, and pick up on that idea as a tribute.

Then are you in violation of "Localism"? Sad that so much of the aid intended for the people was scarfed up by corrupt politicians. Let's hope they remember the next time they vote. I'd think manually cranked radios would be the best, since the power has been out for a long time in some places.
