The shortest day of the year is now in progress with the exact moment of Solstice set for 4:48 AM UTC or 10:48 PM CST.
At the moment of true solstice the earth is at its farthest distance from the sun, rounding the far tip of its elliptical orbit, poised to return on the far side of the orbit back toward the equinox in springtime when day and night will be equal length.
Winter begins today, yet days will start becoming longer by about 1-minute per day.
It all happens silently, yet is a large astronomical event in our planet's life.
In reality, today marks the beginning of a new year for life on earth.

Less daylight hours can be very detrimental for some. My wife is a prime example of that, being a sun worshiper. Bad enough she can't stand the cold, in Northeast Ohio direct sunlight is rare at this time of the year due to the "lake effect" clouds from Lake Erie. If we get a month of sunny days between October and March we're lucky.
So, yes Carl, a rebirth as it were. The daylight hours increase, even if ever so gradually, is much anticipated and welcome.

Arriving at Beliefs
I have come to believe that the real reason people string lights everywhere this time of year is precisely to counter-affect the longer darkness and absence of sun.
Not being in touch with their own biological operating systems, people attach the reason for the lights to all the holiday customs as if the lights were only a stage prop.
But, switching sides, as long as the stage is well lit let's have a play!
I'll be the 3-wise men.

Your post reminded me something I had read about the effect on radio waves during the winter solstice, but couldn't recall what it was.. after a brief search I still didn't find what I was looking for, but the search did result in an interesting read called "The Enigma of Towers", which relates to a theory that the round towers dotting Ireland (which were built by monks), are in a sense, actually radio towers! www.whale.to/b/callahan.html
Didn't find what I was looking for, but found that instead.. Thanks Carl!

Tremendous Find!
Wow that discovery about stone towers and whole other ways of explaining their function is a university education in one sitting.
So then, what you're saying, is that when we build little part 15 towers we are connecting to nature, the stars and the power of life!
I buy that.
