I've used the commercial product Virtual Audio Cable (VAC) for years and it has served me in good stead.
Recently, however, I've had issues attempting to install it on my main, general purpose laptop running Windows 7. The driver just doesn't load, even though it runs on another Windows 7 computer.
I really didn't want to wipe my daily use computer to reinstall the O/S and still have it possibly not work. So I searched around and came across the 'free' product VB-Cable. It's not really free - you get one cable for trial use with no restrictions and if you want up to 2 more (which is really necessary), you have to donate (minimum 5 Euro or around USD$4.25. That's not all that bad, and the product does work, even if it's a bit cumbersome to install with multiple drivers (one for each cable).
So now I have my station running (for test purposes) on my laptop. I haven't noticed it putting any sort of burden on the system some 24 hours later. For those that don't want to spend US$30 for VAC, VB-Cable is certainly a viable option.

I actually thought I had used VB-Cables installed and running before on an old computer and I never paid anything - but that was years ago, and I might be thinking of Breakaway Pipeline (which is free, not a demo) but I'm not sure if it's a standalone or requires other Breakaway software to be installed: www.claessonedwards.com/download-demos

Yep, Breakaway pipeline is just a virtual soundcard! From what I've been able to tell the computer is seeing it as a soundcard that can be used as inputs or outputs and there are option for multiple cables. You don't even have to go thru your control panel, it selects it as your default input and playback device upon install. You can get it here: www.breakawayone.com/downloads/ Don't need the Breakaway One, just get the Breakaway Pipeline.

It's great that they have the Pipeline separately, and you don't need Breakaway itself to be installed, I'll have to try this, and hope there are no jingles that play since it's free.
Breakaway itself wants to try to fool you into installing it I think, saying it's free to use without limitations, but jingles will be inserted unless you register, and really, that's a limitation.
Another cable panel to try is JACK, it's truly freeware, not pay or dancing on the edge.

Is there a Windows build for JACK? All I found when I was looking for alternatives was the source code.
