For the last year or two I have been using Teamviewer free version. At first it was to access my home PCs and security cameras remotely when I was living and working in Michigan, but since I retired mainly to control my Part 15 station from my laptop in my den to the PC that runs Zara radio in my 2nd floor shop/studio. Well for the last 2 weeks I have been unable to use Teamviewer because I get the message that my trial period has expired and I must buy a license. The cheapest license I can find is $41/month. That's just not going to happen. For the last 2 weeks I have been going back and forth with TV support. It seems I have to prove I am not using it for commercial purposes. Friday I had to send them my TV logs to examine to prove I am not using it for commercial purposes. I expect that I will hear back from them Monday either asking for more proof or they will unlock my account. No matter. Prior to TV I used various versions of VNC. Yesterday I downloaded and installed TightVNC (www.tightvnc.com). It's completely free and does what I need better than TV. I recommend it to anyone looking for a remote control solution. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Jim I am very glad you happened to post about TeamViewer and TightVNC.
At the recent ALPB meeting... come to think of it you were in attendance so may have heard the discussion... Neil (Radio8Z) and Troy mentioned the same two softwares for remote control access to computers.
When I visited the TeamViewer site I got nervous by their strict policy of being free only for noncommercial use, because I am in the same position you are... To a casual outsider my KDX Radio Website certainly might look business-like, so I too opted for TightVNC which is entirely open source (free) for anybody.
However my first attempt to install TightVNC must have been done wrong because I got no results.
Meanwhile I've been using the native "Remote Desktop Connection" which so far allows me to access harddrives on a LAN, and so far I do not know if I'll be able to access the screen or keyboard of the remote computer.
Anyway, I appreciate your post... it tells me I have made the right choices.

All Of a Sudden
I am posting this message using TightVNC and am thrilled!
After reading your recent post, Jim, I tried it without changing anything, AND IT WORKS!
It is the triumph of the day and concludes over 2 weeks of tinkering around.
At long last KDX has moved into a new age of being a station that is backed up!
Of course there is always more... such as having an alternative power supply. So now we can move on to the other growth areas!
My company should give me a $50,000,000 bonus and so should yours!

I'd approve my bonus but then I would have to lay myself off. Back to TV, I haven't even heard from them today so they are done. I sympathize with them, trying to sell a commercial product that does what free products do. Not sure what their market is, but guessing its small educational organizations with clueless IT staff.
