Door Opening SoftwareBack when I was trying to make audio connections within the computer hoping to connect applications that didn't want to connect to each other, DavidC told me about Virtual Cable, a low cost download that enabled otherwise impossible connections. Since then Bob MRAM brought word of a free "virtual cable" called VB Cable which also got tested with success. Yesterday I spent awhile trying to figure out why I've been unable to launch more than one instance of VB Cable. Point is that with the commercial Virtual Cable any number of "cables" can be generated to make numerous patches, but VB Cable only yields one "cable". A deep study of the somewhat confusing website tells what to do if more than one "cable" is needed. It seems that a second product named VB-CABLES A&B is available as "Donationware", with no specific price mentioned. What it boils down to is that VB Cable provides one "virtual cable" and VB-CABLES A&B brings two more for a total of 3. VB Cable LinkVirtual Audio Cable Link

A quick look in the dictionary posted to the Quick Reply says that "virtual" means "in effect though not in fact."

Invisible Cables
About the make-believe cables DHR said: "in effect though not in fact."
And that is very true which is why I framed the word "cable" in quote marks. There's no soldering involved.

The Bit Rate of Elmer's Glue
By now I know that I don't know what I am doing so I'm willing to try glue and keep notes.
Follow me closely on this:
A sound begins its life as an analog event but gets digitized during the recording process. When the WAV file is converted to mp3 it gets re-digitized. When it gets played in Zara I guess it remains digital but I'm not sure whether it gets further digitized when it follows the output to the VB-Cable which is running at 48 kbps looking into the Line-In-Plugin in the Winamp Playlist running at 48 kbps, passing through Stereo Tool which re-shapes it and spits it into the Altacast Encoder converting to 8 kbps shoved into Icecast Server and puked out of some hapless dial-up (analog?)line in Omro, Wisconsin at 2800 Baud.
All the hardware stands still while the digits move.
I stand still and my mind does not move.
Are we ready yet to do a seminar on streaming?

Deep Into It
Like a maniac nerd geek I've been experimenting with the entire audio chain going in and out of virtual existence from the control point of screen and keyboard.
By the way, when we talked about "virtual cables" I meant to say that they can be designated as a single stereo pair or a single mono half-pair.
The deluxe Virtual Cable has a new version which I downloaded and spent today printing the revised manual which is book size and contains a university-level education on computer audio including medical details on all of the defects inside Windows audio which must be tolerated because Windows doesn't clean up its mistakes, it just replaces them with new mistakes.
The free VB-Cable is very simple and straight forward from an operator point-of-view whereas Virtual Cable has enough tweaks and adjustments to warrant inclusion on Elon Musk's Mars rocket ship.
Studying a subject makes many people smarter, but when I study these complicated technical subjects I become progressively more confused to where I need to be reminded of where we are and what does the clock have to do with it.
Sharing my confusion with the ALPB community is based on the theory that having a mixed-up introduction to a topic is a starting point.

Virtual Engineering Laboratory
This morning KDX Worldround Radio is running a SUCCESSFUL TEST employing both versions of virtual cable in an air chain that takes up the whole computer.
Zara is outputting into VB-cable which connects to Winamp Line-In Plugin.
The Winamp Direct Sound Output is feeding into Virtual Cable No. 1 which is being received by two accompanying software utilities named "Audio Repeaters" and branched to Audio 2nd Output and USB Audio Output supplying audio for AM 1550, AM1680, and FM 89.5.
Smooth as virtual silk.
