I strongly prefer the term "Happy Independence Day" . The Fourth of July has nothing to do with it.

Time For a Name Adjustment
I think "Independence Day" is arcane, as the separation from Great Britain is such old history and now they're our partners in War Crime.
For me it's "Birth of the Nation".

Well what I really dislike is the term "Fourth of July". That is nonsense. The correct term is "Independence Day. Time For a Name AdjustmentI think "Independence Day" is arcane, as the separation from Great Britain is such old history and now they're our partners in War Crime. For me it's "Birth of the Nation".

My post, "Happy 4th of Something" left it wide open for anyone to interpret the blank into whatever they wish to be. "Something" could be anything.
Happy 4th of helping yourself to another beer, happy 4th of the last piece of pie that you probably shouldn't eat anyway or happy 4th of ...well whatever. I just wasn't feeling very patriotic at the time, as a matter of fact , I still feel less than patriotic right now.
Something just doesn't feel right in the world. I can't place it.

I always say and wish people a "Happy Independence Day". My post, "Happy 4th of Something" left it wide open for anyone to interpret the blank into whatever they wish to be. Let me add that the USA was founded on principles very different from many other nations. Individual rights and equal opportunity were paramount. Yes slavery was still legal at the time but it was outlawed when the nation was still very young, much earlier than it was outlawed in any other country and by that I mean the USA was 85 years old when slavery was outlawed. One of the principals of our nation was leaving great autonomy to the states which sadly has been steadily corrupted since Lincoln. When colonies and territories joined the union it was never written that it was a one-way deal, i.e., that once you joined you cannot leave. That's more like the Mafia. So when the Confederate states decided to secede, they did not rebel. They did not revolt. They did not commit insurrection. They simply wished to walk away. Revisionists have tried to claim the Civil War was about slavery but that was not the case. At the time, the Industrial Revolution was still in its early stages and the loss of all that tax revenue from the Confederate states' agrarian economy was something that Lincoln could not abide. He latched on to the slavery issue well after the war began. Lincoln did great damage to the Constitution and that has sadly continued. Our government was never intended by the founders to be our Mommy, but sadly many Americans of today are unaware of that.

And a happy 4th to you too and yours bluebucketradio. Canada just celebrated its 150th anniversary on July 1. I've always thought it was great that 2 birthdays of countries that are so close together geographically should also be close together date wise.

Names Is What You Call Them
Jim Henry sees it one way: "I strongly prefer the term "Happy Independence Day" . The Fourth of July has nothing to do with it."
Except that "Independence Day" occurs on the 4th day of the month of July, making "July 4th" a quick shorthand.
But the prevailing point in this thread is that Barry of Blue Bucket left it wide open by saying "The Fourth of Something".
There's something to that.
