This Isn't Happening
The Saturday opera was on KDX so I headed outside to work on the yard.
Standing on the porch overlooking the landscape I was astounded to hear opera singing coming from across the street and it was the exact same opera I'd just left behind in the house. My god, a neighbor was listening to KDX!
I started walking down the lawn toward the music so I could see which neighbor and which yard but spotted my Grundig FR-200 sitting on an upturned bucket where I'd left it the day before. My own radio was tuned to KDX and the sound was closer than it seemed.
The radio had been out there overnight but the signal on 1680 kHz is only active while I'm in the yard so at most WPRR in Ada, Michigan, had faintly serenading the darkness.
It is not customary for KDX to leave radios outdoors... this makes the 2nd time.
The last time, in 2009, the same radio was in a bucket of yard waste that had been set on the curb for pickup the next morning... when I went searching for the missing radio I discovered that the waste bucket was telling passersby the latest world news.
I've always wanted to manage a radio station. I probably should learn how.
