If your space can take a longer power strip, there are 'shop' style strips that will eliminate the 'udder' problem.
I have one that's 4 feet long, with 12 outlets spaced about 4.5 inches center to center, and the case is extruded aluminum. You can get them in different sizes.
I think outlets hooked up like that are generally safe, but that udder is going a little too far in my opinion. There are the extra connections to make at every outlet, power bricks can get kicked, at best a temporary solution.
Not to say that I don't do gymnastics with outlet strips myself, but when I get serious I try to get my stripping under control.
