I've never had a smartphone and never will, and will never get addicted.

I can see a gray screen being less appealing, and slower to use since you won't have the colors to prompt you. You'll probably get a smart phone OldiesWMRK, hurry, don't put it off.. I was a late adopter too, good with my desktop computer, but it became harder to participate in society without a mobile phone. Businesses assume you have a mobile number, restaurants are set up to text you when a table's ready and wait for you to respond. The phone is de rigueur these days. Boomer

Nothing wrong with Smartphones. As an Internet Radio and on air hobbyist a smartphone is an essential piece of equipment to keep your station running in tip top shape.
Another essential part of a successful Internet Radio station is a Remote Server in case you have Internet issues. I have plenty of Data on my smartphone to quickly switch to the smartphone's Internet connection and fire up TeamViewer and run NextKast on the remote server. This keeps my listeners happy and keeps my ratings up there.
Newer smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy line and HTC have FM Radio's activated. Great for testing your transmitter to be sure your putting out the range you want.
I Highly recommend at least 5+ GB of high speed data per month and Verizon is the #1 company for any serious Internet Radio Station operator who needs to babysit the station while away.

I agree that there's nothing inherently wrong with smartphones. They're a great tool, particularly if you use them as a phone.
The fault lies with the user(s), who can't seem to remove their eyes from the screen, while driving, walking or attempting to hold an in-person conversation. But with Darwin's survival of the fittest, these individuals may gradually disappear.

The problem is when these things become a part of your body and they are necessary for life like eating and peeing. When watching the Canadian women's soccer game a while back even the players when they come off the field to the bench.....out it comes....nuts! I just don't understand the obsession with the telephone....it didn't cause such a furor when it was invented. And why do you want to see things on a little screen with everything so tiny. No, I will NEVER have one of these things....I can live without it. And the argument that I should get with 2017 and everyone has one is not a reason I should get one. Had to get a give in and get a credit card because it was needed....after all how would you buy the transmitters for our hobby and shop online. Or rent a car. But it's not a part of my body! Just a way to pay for something you can't go to a store and buy.

Strange Customs of the Human Being
In the 1970s I picked up a part time job at a nearby FM station and was cautioned that the station went by the chain of command and it was not permissible to speak directly to the top boss.
Right at that time the top boss summoned a staff meeting to announce that now he had a mobile telephone in his car and could be reached anytime.
No one in management seemed to realize the contradiction.

Those without smartphones miss out. They replace the Mp3 player as well as the crap on regular Radio.
I have used SNAV several times a real life saver. If I want to know where the closest seafood place is I ask Google. It saves time and money.
I am writing this now on mine and attend meetings like the ALPB on mine.
The smartphone is the greatest invention since the lightbulb. It should be a welcome piece of technology and in my opinion everyone should have one.
I have actually used it to communicate with my dad who was almost totally deaf. Because we have to yell and scream to get him to hear he uses his smartphone to read what I texted him. This way we can communicate where is otherwise we would not.

I have sympathy for Mark though, it's tough to be told what you must do. Smart phone saturation gives one new freedoms, but then society operating by smart phone takes away the freedom to not have a smart phone.
I've been comfortable with my PC desktop, I think that's really the way to experience the web in depth. Before that, I was happy with just AM and FM radio and the family TV, so to add on this really intense piece of new technology was a decision I didn't take lightly. I didn't want the smart phone to displace what I already was into and make it less valuable.
Now I look at the smart phone as just another tool, doing what technology should, making life easier. I realize I don't have to be glued to it, and can use it sensibly. Not having to wait in line at the restaurant is a nice convenience, and not having to ask for directions when in a new area can be more efficient.
Texting is crazy efficient, especially if you're trying to coordinate a meeting with several parties, and on the bus or train, your neighbors don't have to hear your conversation. I also have a camera that's ready to go in a couple of seconds.
They key is for you to be tough and in control of it, keep it in its place. If you tend to get addicted to things, then be even more mindful of that.

@ Thelegacy....As for replacing the crap on radio, that's what we are here for. Don't need a smart phone for that. Most do AM here(except me) and a regular radio is needed for listeners. No one will listen on a smart phone. As for replacing an MP3 player....why do I have to replace the MP3 player? With something that needs a monthly fee to make it work. Or costs $600+ to buy. To do the same thing. My MP3 player that I use for the final audio source has gapless playback(no space between tracks)great for radio, SD card capable for 30 gigs of space and rigged for C battery operation for a month of 24/7 playback and no down time off the air recharging all the time....can your smart phone do that? I have lots of extras for back up. @ Boomer.... I compare looking at things on a little tiny screen like watching TV on a 3" screen. What's wrong with a regular computer with a nice size screen to see things good and not have to have tiny writing I can hardly see. I have no one to text that I can't email, no need to be on the phone all the time and be so obsessed with it....what did we do before. I think a lot of us here(in fact most)were around before these things existed and your phone was at home....you were out there was no answer or a message was left. What did we all do! Just saying.....
