Here is an article about using cold war technology to send information (ads probably) to smartphones and fm radio's using Back Scatter techniques. As if the FM band wasn't already a big mess... Quote from article "A team of researchers has found that a venerable audio transmitting technique could hold promise for smart cities, as well as private companies looking to inexpensively reach large numbers of people. The technology described in a white paper titled FM Backscatter: Enabling Connected Cities and Smart Fabrics — written by three student researchers and two faculty advisers from the University of Washington (UW) — is a new approach to what’s known as backscattering, or ambient backscattering; it’s a relative of today’s RFID technology, and a passive broadcasting method that figured in one of the Cold War’s most notorious spy scandals." Scattering Right Back At Them
That's a head bumper, Barry!
Maybe we can use it ourselves to an advantage?
What if we could send out word, or, what if we could back scatter word about part 15?
In other words use this technology to educate people so they know we are legal...
And then get them to drive around looking for our signals.
Then get them to send money.
Or whatever.
Maybe we too can be Back Scatter Stations!

I don't think bacckscatter is a good thing at all. It leaves many ways for companies to abuse it. This could be why their fighting so hard to stop Hobby Radio as the big wigs won't know where the hobbyist will broadcast. Thus they can't pollute the dial in the large tourist areas with ads for folks to come here, buy here.
I see this as a ses pool of crap comming to the FM band and if so no one will want to listen to the Radio because everytime they come up to a store it will have all sorts of crap coming in on their Radio. If the band isn't already polluted enough.
I wonder what backlash will happen from this now? What is the FCC thinking to allow this garbage.

Places to Have Ses
People will always look for meeting places to have ses with a partner, and ses pools are very popular.
