We Knew That
Good article Druid Hills. It's happening exactly as we expected.
Way back when we first heard of Norway's plans I think all of us knew they were making a mistake.
Same mistake, I take the opportunity to wedge into this conversation, made by so many international broadcasters when they shut down their shortwave stations.
We have a slogan: Norway? No Way!

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. What's wrong with it the way it is. The average radio can't even hear a difference and you can't hear digital anyway....it's like shorthand used to be. It's just a coded system of storage and transmission and converted back to analog in the receiver. Plus our hobby can only exist with analog. don't understand the point of this anyway.
Even with TV there is a downside to digital transmission. If the signal is weaker with analog it was still watchable with a little "snow" in the picture but with digital if the signal is a little weak some coded info is missing and the picture becomes like a broken jig saw puzzle. Coverage is much more limited with digital.

From the regulator's (and the implementor's) point of view, DAB need less bandwidth, so in the space occupied by a single station today, you can put multiple stations.
But it's foolhardy if you don't take the listener's perspective into consideration. Stations can't exist if no one is listening to them.

I'm sort of worried that they will try to start that crap here in the United States. HD radio pretty much has been a big first as you have to be right on top of the station to be able to receive the signal.
The AM revitalization Methods are not quite clear yet. We know that they're bringing AM stations to FM but what are they actually going to do to the AM band.
That is a big question that we really need to have answered. Any ideas?

HOBBY RADIO!!! and expand the FM band like they did with AM. OR.....go like Norway and leave the FM band or part of it intact for hobby radio like New Zealand's model.

Should Be Worried About
No doubt the digital radio industry wants to convert America to an all digital landscape and some words from the FCC hint that a few of them think "digital is revitalizing", which we know is a goofy thought.
Some time ago I proposed that the ALPB take an official position to "Keep AM Analog", and we tucked that in the drawer because the ALPB is not activist and does not take political positions.
But of course we as individuals can express political opinions, especially if they have to do with radio, and I say now...
KEEP AM ANALOG.
Let's try that again:
KEEP AM ANALOG
One more time:
KEEP AM ANALOG!

Adding to What I Said
Although transmitting digital on AM makes no sense, we have accepted digital radio as the standard for streaming on the internet.
We have done some analog streaming, but it just doesn't seem to get very far on the internet hookup.
Maybe somebody knows some good analog streaming software?

We may have to someday group together and take a stand.

The Time is Nigh
TheLegacy says: "We may have to someday group together and take a stand."
We are grouped together and this is a stand. The time has come!
