While Planning Lunch the Brain Comes Up With a Theory About a Chronic Technical Problem
It's been several months that we here at KDX Worldround Radio have been at times annoyed by the C.Crane Radio Plus when the volume level drops in half and pops back on by jiggling the volume control but doesn't always pop back and sometimes it pops back without touching the radio.
What I've all of a sudden realized is that the radio never flakes out when tuned to the Ramsey FM30b Transmitter nor the AMT3000 transmitter.
It's the C.Crane FM2 Transmitter that jumps in level at odd intervals.
The C.Crane FM2 was one of those discounted deals which had been returned by a previous customer.
It was Mark who said, back when we made the choice to save $10, that he would have preferred a new unit.
Now I'm thinking the FM2 has a cable problem or a cold solder on the circuit card or some contagious disease that might depopulate the entire midwaste of the Homeland.
Later tonight or tomorrow or the next day or this coming weekend I'll run left/right tones through the transmitter and study it while poking here and there with a toothpick to see if anything is loose.
If I was working for an employer they would think I was too slow for taking months to come up with these ideas, but being self employed I can afford to be tolerant.

Carl, if you have the radio in the same room as the transmitter or even if you don't if there was a cold solder or bad joint at the antenna that wouldn't cause what you are getting with the reception. The problem is the audio cable or the input level control.
If it's the radio there would be static or drop outs when turning the volume and it would just need cleaning.

Only Getting Started
Mark submitted some suggestions: "Carl, if you have the radio in the same room as the transmitter or even if you don't if there was a cold solder or bad joint at the antenna that wouldn't cause what you are getting with the reception. The problem is the audio cable or the input level control.
"If it's the radio there would be static or drop outs when turning the volume and it would just need cleaning."
Agreed that it's not an antenna problem in this case... it's definitely an audio problem.
The first round of tests I sent a sine wave tone on each channel, first left followed by right, and the transmitter remained stable as I jiggled the audio cable and jostled it a little.
The audio pot on the radio, on the other hand, did seem somewhat fidgety, and I almost wonder if the 19 kHz stereo pilot isn't causing the radio to act up.
The other transmitters which do not have this same problem have their stereo turned off.

Carl if you can open the Ccrane radio and with some contact cleaner with lubricant get it in the volume control and spray a little inside and rotate it 10 or more times. That will fix.
Could also be the transmitter not transmitting the pilot tone but if that forget it...get another. but still don't think would cause sound dropout.

Thank You Mark
For saying, "Carl if you can open the Ccrane radio and with some contact cleaner with lubricant get it in the volume control and spray a little inside and rotate it 10 or more times. That will fix."
I will do that and report here what the result is. I may be slow getting to it, other things are also going on, but it's past due to open that radio and clean it. The buttons are also flaky and need help.
The one thing I will do with the transmitter is look for bad solders. But it now seems more like the radio is the sick one.

About the Hat
Once again I drew Druid Hill's admiration: "I like your hat."
Just between us, I stole the hat.
