So yesterday I decided to do a 3 part test on the new ATU with an unmodified Talking House V5. The first test was using the supplied wire antenna on 1610 kHz. using a Sony portable that I mentioned elsewhere, the range was about 1/10th of a mile before the signal disappeared into the noise.
Next I used a mounting similar to the chain link fence mount that Bill at Hobby Broadcaster used to initially test the Procaster.
The test conditions: Fence mounted, no ground attached, fed with supplied quad shield RG-6 that was 25′ in length and laying on the ground. The antenna was about 6 feet from a wood framed house (metal siding) and the top of the antenna was touching some leaves.
Not the best setup but this was the idea.
The tune-up was easy and took less than a minute. The signal peaked at about 20 uA that Geoffrey at ISS says is typical. It should be noted here that no amount of cable placement affected the meter reading leading me to conclude that radiation from the coax was minimal if any at all.
After the set-up the range using the Sony receiver was slightly more than 1/4 mile. Also after a drenching rain and temperature swings between 70 and 95 degrees, the reading on the meter remained stable.
Test 2 will be the same test condition but fence mounted in the clear. Test 3 will be mounted on a 10 foot pole.

Glad that you're trying out different setups!
That's why I like the testing phase for a new gadget, you can do the trials and experimental setups and try lots of things before it's locked 'in production'. When a project works I tend to not want to touch it.
Maybe you could do a blog about the different setups you try, I always like to read real life results and compare them.
I used to hear 'talking houses' in the neighborhood on sale homes, and the signals didn't go too far, 100-200 feet I'd estimate, and I guessed their antennas must be in the house.
Way to go, getting one of these puppies!

Interesting in that the range achieved by radio8z using a ground-mounted system such as shown below produced a useful signal for a radius of a mile, or somewhat more.

Rich: It was a very poor installation by design. Very close to metal siding etc. NO ground attached.

If the transmitter was powered by the a-c line and connected through it to the utility ground rod at the service entrance, AND the shield of your 25ft coax cable is connected to the tx chassis -- then a path to r-f ground would exist, even if unrecognized.

I'm glad to see a user review and real world tests to back it up. Anyone else using this yet, or plan to try it out?
My Talkin' House is old and not worthy of the ATU's quality I don't think.
