This would be a full digital signal with no analog, so for an analog radio it would sound like a loud 'hash' noise. Only digital radios using the HD radio system on the AM side would be able to hear the audio. "For some broadcasters the path to AM revitalization isn’t by migrating to FM but rather making the AM dial more listenable. A digital signal is one such potential way to do that, with 201 AM stations currently broadcasting in digital, according to Xperi. That list may grow by one as Hubbard Radio’s adult alternative “The Gamut” WWFD Frederick, MD (820) has asked the Federal Communications Commission to grant it one-year experimental authority to drop its analog signal and go all-digital." insideradio.com/free/digital-am-s-next-test-site-is-frederick-marylandLink found at the HFU Boomer

Approved
I thought it would take awhile for approval, but as we now know they're on the air testing already, and it's a music format.
Does anyone live in the area with an HD AM radio who could get a good recording. I know it's asking for a lot of luck here, but it would be nice to hear what it sounds like, if we need to plan the future of radio.

Harrisburg is right on the outer fringe.

I agree, going by the Radio-Locator map, that guy is at fringe, which is 150 microvolts according to the site, and where I live in analog during the summer that's usually a weak and noisy signal from fringe stations, and may be listenable with a good radio, like a GE Super out in the yard. That DXer must have a superb setup with the antenna and quiet location, to get that kind of signal strength on the Sony, 3 bars!
I've been trying to hear them on skip at night, using the same model Sony that's in the video, and I haven't even seen the HD indicator start flashing. The best time to pick it up on skip might be just after they increase power in the morning, or before they decrease it at night.
Jim Henry lives out Philly way, and I believe he said his cars have HD radios, and if they can do HD on the AM side, he might be close enough to receive their groundwave at night.
Yeah, Mellow Yellow, always liked that song too, hearing it on my dad's AM-only car radio, with the bass it has, and thinking it was a catchy tune.

WGY HDHere's my reception of WGY in New York, I think it's a 400 mile path, in hybrid digital. The receiver is a Sony like in the guy's video receiving the Frederick station. The stock loop antenna was on a window sill, with a Terk tunable loop next to it to peak up the signal. WGY Schenectady NY HD 7-120-18.mp3 (986.73 KB) It's mono, since WGY was in mono, for more accurate sound quality. Direct line input to the computer's Realtek onboard sound. I got a few minutes of HD reception in an hour, otherwise the radio stayed in analog, with the HD indicator always flashing. Boomer
