I've read on several sites that ISS, the folks that bring you the Talking House, are going to be releasing a new, improved version of their external ATU. That's been confirmed over at Part15.us, and apparently Bill Baker of ISS is compiling an e-mail list of interested potential purchasers. Info can be found over at Part15.us.
That's good news for those with limited budgets. I've compared side by side installations of a Talking House/ATU combination with a ProCaster (identical grounds, identical programming, etc.) and the range differences were practically negligible.

Guess it's official
I always had wondered why Radio Systems quit the ATU in the first place, because almost right after, people wanted them, and they were scarce.
I might be interested if I helped with stations for others, like a local library's historical society that was thinking of anything they could do for outreach. They have a mile wide valley community and are pretty centered, but there's a street that's like a pan handle, that would likely get a weaker signal.

It's all going to depend on the price, of course, but the addition of an ATU to a Talking House makes it a very formidable installation, particularly with the audio-modified transmitters. Such a setup can compete with a Rangemaster or a ProCaster, at a fraction of the cost. What is unclear is whether the Part 15 certification of the transmitter/ATU combination will remain intact (which is necessary).
Perhaps this will introduce the needed competition to the market, and help drive the prices down of the more expensive transmitters (or at the very least, force them to innovate and save money).
I believe it also shows that despite the dire predictions, radio isn't quite dead yet!
