It helps when you play a niche format that is hard to find on the air. This is a format that I play even though there are a few streaming stations that play album oriented Rock there are few and far between which keep the true album Rock stance.
I'm not afraid to mention that I'm a 100% hobby radio station not owned by any Corporation such as Clear Channel cumulus broadcasting or whatever. I State this plenty of times during my broadcast and since I also stream I get donations both ways.
Since my station plays plenty of Canadian Rock groups and one day I was playing a song from the band Goddo a fan member of that band notifyed Greg Godovitz who was a Goddo member and told him of my radio station. Just before Christmas time I received a $200 donation.
If you notice on my website I have a PayPal donation link I also remind folks how expensive satellite radio is and the fact that the Legacy has over one month of non-repetitive Rock unless otherwise requested and even requested songs are only played once in 24 hours. Your donations continue to help the music expand even further as our goal is to become North America's True album Rock Source. Then I give the website and how to donate and usually I get a donation that very day. Reminding folks that even a $20 donation among 10 people would be two hundred bucks. These things encourage people to donate to your station.
I'm not afraid to ask for donations because my station provides a much-needed service to those that are tired of top 40 and rap which has totally polluted terrestrial radio for a long time. I even tell people ask yourself how much you would pay yearly for a satellite Radio subscription just to have access to album oriented Rock. Then I remind them that even with a food stamp phone and listening to us on the 64 kilobit AAC Plus side of the station with a patch cord plugged into the aux Jack of your stereo or Bluetooth they can avoid the very pollution of top 40 and rap even with the 2GB plan you get with the Androids that are given to you via the folks over there at the food stamp place.
So low income people have access to album-oriented rock as well which would not happen if they had to pay for satellite radio. Those are the things that I remind my listeners and they do respond with a donation simple as that.
I've always said this before you don't know what will happen unless you ask. Asking for donations is not a crime because you have to remind your listeners that you are a hobby radio station. It sounds lame but trust me it works.
