KDX Suspends Streaming
In our lazy style of management KDX has cleared the way for inspecting the audio line from computer output to the transmitter inputs of AMT3000 AM 1550, and Ramsey 35b FM 89.5. These transmitters will remain out of service until we actually get around to inspecting the audio line, and while we're at it we have a design change for the AMT3000 antenna.
Put back into service is AMT5000 AM 1680, and EDM FM 89.5 for daily program transmission.
Out of service indefinitely is KDX Icecast Streaming, which will be brought back on a limited schedule.
Plans to re-open our shortwave service come to mind every so often.
A second AMT3000 AM 1640, KHZ Radio, is behind schedule for starting.
Plans are underway to wash the dishes.

Love Hate Streaming
By the way I write about the science of streaming over the internet under the "transmitter" category because I believe a streaming server is a form of digital transmitter. Right?
Having said this: "Out of service indefinitely is KDX Icecast Streaming, which will be brought back on a limited schedule",
I will update by saying that I slowly brought streaming back on-line until mid-day today when it got shut down again.
What spoils the experience is the unknowability of the "connections" that most people class as "listeners" but there is no real way of knowing what they are.
That particular discomfort puts me in a position of feeling most comfortable when there are no connections at all! So therefore, why stream?
Take this example: since returning, we once again observe a certain connection that links up early in the morning and stays connected throughout the day until late evening. It does not match the profile of a real "listener". I have even broadcast a continuous test tone for a solid hour and "it" stays connected. What the hell kind of parasite is it?
I think I've mentioned this before but some of my programs on KDX are provided with the understanding that I am streaming them at certain times, so what I think we'll try next is consolidating all such programs on a single day and only stream one day a week.

You've wondered about those phantom listeners for a while, could they be your server checking in with different directories to post that you're station is up?
Something I'd suggest is if you can find out if they're actually streaming or just sitting there staying connected, if your system has a way to tell how many bytes are being transferred. Almost a continuous flow at your audio's bit rate would show they're streaming.
Another thing is to look up the IP address of the 'listener', just put it in a search engine, and you should get some info about the host, and maybe the city they're closest to.
There's also the client they're connecting with, does it say something like VLC, Firefox, Winamp, MPC etc.? That would show if a real player is on the stream.
You could try to disconnect, reconnect by shutting the server off and on right away, to see if the connection from them comes back.
